questioning life

i seem to be filled with questions, more questions then i have answers for.  i question everything.  some have said this makes me "smart" while others claim that it makes me cynical.  either way, questions just seem to be part of my life.  now, i do not ask questions to simply cause problems; i ask questions to find answers; sometimes i ask questions to bust a chop or two - i always question the silly and the stupid.  by doing so i am able to see just how crazy this world is - i get to question life.  recently i was sent a list of questions that i added to my personal list and i would love to share them with you.  here are an ever growing list of questions:

  1. if your skin and hair are made of the same stuff (keratin) why does the sun lighten your hair and darken your skin?

  2. if the mirror shows the opposite of what we do, why does it not show me walking away from it as i walk to it?

  3. why don't you ever see the headline "psychic wins lottery?"

  4. if they truly are psychic why don't they call you?

  5. how can a car company make money selling a car "$1 over invoice?"

  6. why is the word "abbreviated" such a long word?

  7. why do you hit the "start" button to "stop" windows?

  8. why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwasher liquid made with real juice?

  9. if 7-11's are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - why put locks on the doors?

  10. exactly what is the difference between an apple and an orange?

  11. why isn't there "mouse flavored" cat food?

  12. when dog food has a "new and improved taste" - who tastes it?

  13. who tastes dog food, or cat food, to see if it really does "tastes more like meat?"

  14. why didn't noah swat the two mosquitoes?

  15. if the "little black box" is the only thing to "survive" a plain crash, why don't we make the whole plain out of the same stuff?

  16. why sterilize the needle used for lethal injections?

  17. why is there brail on button on a drive-up atm?

  18. why don't sheep shrink in the rain?

  19. exactly what is "voluntary compliance?"

  20. if "con" is the opposite of "pro," is "congress" the opposite of "progress?"

  21. if, as the tv evangelists claim, we are heading to the end times why do they want us to pledge long term to their ministries

i believe that wisdom starts with the question "why?"  it allows us to see deeper into life and to see what makes things tick.  by asking questions, even what some say are silly questions, opens our eyes to the world around us.  while none of the above questions seek to have a definitive answer, they do seek to be pondered.  for example, the question that asks, "exactly what is the difference between an apple and an orange?"

when we ask that question - even on a rhetorical basis - we start to see some interesting information.  the first thing that comes to mind, is that apples and oranges have more in common then they do different.  let's examine:

both are fruits

both grow on trees

both are sweet (both have sour versions)

both have a skin

both have tasty flesh

both are good for you

both have seeds

both make a great drink

both are packed with vitamins

and i am certain you can add a great many more to this list.  while some may see this question as simply "silly" when we truly take the time to answer the question we start looking at what they have in common - the question should not be "what is the difference" it should be "what makes them the same" - but in our nature we do not want to find what we have in common, we seek to find what separates us.  but in Christ we are united to see what we have in common with the world around us.

silly questions, like the ones listed above, can be funny, and are meant to get us to to think.  they are designed to get us to see how silly our life can be - and what changes we need to make in our approach to life.
