Road
Trip.
i
was all ready to go - a great day at the lake
with friends. i had everything packed; my
extra swim suit, diapers, powder, lunch (a
delightful collection of fruits and insects - the crunchy kind), lotion, extra
ear plugs, my favorite microbrew and just enough
cash to have a good time and not pay the way of
everyone. i packed my 72 gremlin and
hit the road. as i turned off the main drag and onto the
highway - i hit want we all hate - it hit the parking lot known
as the "freeway."
as
i sat, waiting just to move an inch, it hit me like a ton of
bricks - well, not really "a ton" if i was
actually hit with a ton of bricks i would be an oil stain on the
highway to lake mead, and that would totally mess-up my weekend
- so, it really just dawned on me, and not really "hit
me" - but i digress. as i was sitting in traffic
cleaning myself (i am a primate remember) i started to think
about church and how church and this
"freeway/parking-lot" have so much in common.
this dawned upon me as i was being very bored just sitting there
listening to the radio and very "not funny"
deejays. here's what i came-up with:
"the
blinker people." these are the church people that
fall into "never on" or "never off."
the never on people are the ones who just cut you off without
care to your safety or the safety of others. while the
never off people never switch, they just seem like they want to.
"the
weaver." you know, those people who weave in and out
of the different lanes trying to get ahead, but in the long term
- they travel the same distance as everyone else. these
are the church people who think they are better then anyone
else, because they spend all their time in study - weaving in
and out of classes and books.
"the
speeder." these people go too fast;
"the
slower." these people go to slow.
"the
rubbernecked." these are the people who keep looking
at other churches and what they are doing, and demand that the
church do the same thing. they always look to others for
what is best inside the community. they need to learn to
look inside.
"the
rearviewer." these are the people in the church who
have more life behind them then they do ahead, so they spend all
their time looking to the past - while trying to move
forward. it is like driving forward while looking only in
the rearview.
"the
tinters." their window are so black with tint, they
can't see out.
i
know what your thinking, "boy, this primate has too much
time on his hands" - and you may be right. but
without opposable thumbs who cares
