Amazed@Him
Roald Maravillas
"..He was in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, discussing
deep questions with them. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding
and his answers." -- Luke 2:46-47
We could only speculate what
"deep" is, and what amazing answers Jesus shared to them. But it is
not difficult to imagine how to be amazed at the new kind of knowledge someone
shares to you. I remember the times when I was a kid, my Dad told me things
about Mayon Volcano which delighted me so much that I got lost in my amazement
chain and never really gave much thought about my Dad, how he is simply amazing
for knowing such things and sharing them to me.
The same thing happened to those
religious teachers - they were amazed at the deep understanding and answers of a
12-year-old kid probably discussing the meaning of life or the fate of the
universe with them, but they were not amazed AT Jesus Himself. They missed the
most important thing in that encounter : Jesus Himself is simply amazing ! This
is what is being overlooked not only by religious leaders of those days, but by
scientific minds of our postmodern era who probe the whole universe and reality
itself. New knowledge of wondrous things about our cosmos get discovered every
single day. New galaxies, stars, and planets get catalogued every week and their
awesome images pour in from light-years away, new mind-boggling findings about
quantum physics get published. We've found out the grand human genome. From the
nano, micro to the macro, excitement abounds. Yet humanity is amazed only at
these marvelous discoveries but not AT the Grand Designer who reveals them -
Jesus in the flesh, the Creator of all reality we enjoy.
This is the common
pitfall of humanity - to be amazed at the gifts, but not at the Giver. Amazement
itself is a wonderful gift from an amazing Giver who reveals great wonders to
all men. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work
of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they
display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not
heard." Psalm 19:1-3 And it is fulfilling that when the next
"amazement" comes along, not only because a new-found knowledge or
discovery arrives, but because of a wonderful human experience - such as seeing
a serene sunset, a beautiful flower, a splendid beach, a fluttering butterfly,
or a fluffy snowfall, a magnificent starry night, or an amazing blue sky - it
simply completes the experience when we look up and remember : Jesus is Amazing
