10
reasons why your church sucks:
6.
It’s concerned with look and not action
one
of the biggest problems facing the modern
church today is it's inability to move into
action - it talks, but it does not move.
over time the modern church has moved from a
community that desired to solve problems to a
community that ignores problems, or expects
the government to solve the problem.
before i get a grip of emails from moderns who
desire to tell me how much the church has
helped change the world let me say this - big
deal. now, i do not mean that as an
insult, but to tell me how the church, and
"faith based" groups changed the
world - take a look at the word - anything to
brag about?
before
i get back, let me share with you some of the
things modern church people share with me
about what the church, and denominations do
"to help."
they
claim that denominations have started homes
and hospitals:
sure,
the church started hospitals, which are now
mega-corporations out to make a buck (even
those still owned by the denominations) - the
"faith-based" element has been
replaced with the desire for a bottom line;
all "faith-based" hospitals in this
area are "private" and will not
accept you if you do not have insurance -
interesting how the modern church turned care
into profit.
the
same is true with the "church homes"
that many people think will be there for them
in the future - one denomination (the united
methodist) tells it's people that they have
"first dibs" when they retire -
which is not true if you can not afford the
fees.
they
claim that they feed the hungry and care for
the homeless:
well,
to some degree that may be true, but you write
a check and have someone else do it for
you. the modern church believes that
tossing money at a problem is equal to working
to solve the problem.
some people i have spoken with actually
believe that by them writing a check is just
like others doing the actual feeding - what
truly happens is the modern church does not
desire to "get dirty" so they write
a check, and sometimes - just sometimes - they
try to serve meals around the holidays.
writing a check is not putting your faith into
action - that requires that you move past the
comfort zone of your life and into the dirt
and hurt of others.
what
i find funny is, the same group of people who
complain about how wasteful the government is
with money, and that "tossing money at a
problem will not solve the problem," all
because they don't want their taxes dollars
increased - is the same group of people in the
church that ask for money all the time to help
solve a problem - i remember watching the 700
club (yea, i was surfing and thought it would
be cool to watch) when pat, just off a rampage
on how the government wants to raise taxes to
toss money at a problem, and we all know that
action is better then money - then turns
around and asks people to send him money for
his "feeding the children" - i have
an idea; why not use the power of the tv to
motivate people out and into action - not
simply ask for money.
in
the modern church committees are formed to
"study the problem" and then, when
or if action is recommended, it is too late,
out dated or misses the point all together.
now, i am not truly calling for the modern
church to change - it is what it is - but we
do not have to "buy into" it.
i am not asking for the modern church to
develop an emerging missional heart - were
service is center and doing is better then
spending and speaking - the modern church is
what it is, and nothing will change that - i
am certian, if you have a modern heart you are
willing to share all the "good
things" the modern church did, and that's
cool - but that does not mean i, or anyone
else, has to continue with the way you have
been doing things.
the
church, in my view, can solve many of the
social problems facing this world - if we all
fed one other person, hunger would go
away. if we all housed one other person,
homelessness would go away. if we all
just did and stopped talking about doing, then
this world would be a great place to be, live
and love.
