Will
The Real Church Please Stand Up
by
Katanya R. Carson
Let
me say from the outset: this is not directed at
any particular denomination. Will somebody please
tell me who in the world christened the Christian
Right as the official spokespersons for the Body
of Christ concerning this war? So I'm watching
Nightline the other month to find a leader from a
very large conservative denomination putting his
and his denomination's "stamp of
approval" on this war on Iraq.
Funny,
they didn't bother to contact the National Council
of Churches or Tony Campolo, or the praying
grandmamas I hear near tears on the radio decrying
this "shock and awe" crap as "shock
and shame."
I
am NOT a pacifist. Let's get that straight. But I
am not looking for war and conflict under every
rock. I take the Bible seriously when Jesus
reminds us that those who live by the sword die by
the sword. We need to pursue peace as much as
possible. I simply don't think the Bush
dictatorship....er....I mean administration has
any clue what pursuing peace means, especially
since a number of them claim to follow Christ.
How
comforting (YIKES!). This assault on Iraq is
ungodly and Christians needs to take up prayer
along with the picket sign to let our voices of
dissent be heard over the propaganda from church
leaders who willingly participate in this orgy of
preemptive strikes.
God
help us all.
